Zoey begins new career path with Steps to Employment

We all come to a point in our professional lives where we sit back and think, “is this job really for me?”

This is much the case for Zoey, who had been a foster carer for over 11 years. Whether it’s an overnight stay or a placement for several years, foster carers just like Zoey provide the support, stability and care every child needs – and little did she know, foster caring would set her up for future roles too.

However, Zoey felt like she was lacking an experienced CV and was uncertain about the job-hunting process (it had been over a decade since she’d had to look for a new job, after all).

That’s when she sought the help of Steps to Employment

New beginnings

Zoey’s journey with Calico Enterprise and the Steps to Employment Team began at one of our Employability Days at Down Town. After a conversation with Chris (our Senior Employment Coach), it became clear that Zoey could benefit from support offered by the team.

Maria, another one of our dedicated Employment Coaches, identified Zoey’s barriers and worked with her to address these issues. Recognising Zoey’s transferable skills and experience in the care industry, Maria made the decision to focus on roles in the Care/Support Sector.

Zoey felt like she had nothing relevant for her CV, but we helped her recognise the masses of experience she’d gained through fostering – including working well under pressure, patience, flexibility, understanding and sensitivity to name but a few. The team also supported Zoey in signing up for various job search sites.

By refining her job search skills, Zoey gained confidence in searching for jobs and applied for various care positions. We continued to guide Zoey throughout the application process, including working on interview skills and preparation.

Quick successes

After identifying a reputable home care company, an interview date was set.

Zoey was brilliant in her interview and is now employed as a Home Carer and thriving in her new role. She’s delighted to find a profession that fits with her values and for the support the Steps to Employment team have provided in making in her change to a new job stress-free.

Zoey said: “Calico’s Steps to Employment provided invaluable support, helping me secure a job I enjoy. The experience has boosted my confidence and outlook for the future.”

Well done Zoey!
