Looking for somewhere warm and welcoming to escape the cold, enjoy some good company or find a little extra support this winter? Down Town in Charter Walk has plenty going on throughout November, December and January.
Whether you’re taking a break from Christmas shopping, looking to try something new, meeting friends or simply fancy getting out of the house, there’s something for everyone at Down Town.
Here are five reasons to pop in this winter.
1. Enjoy good food and a warm welcome
Come in from the cold and enjoy a comforting meal, a hot drink and some friendly company at the Down Town café.
There’s a great-value Wednesday soup and sandwich deal, with homemade soup and a sandwich for just £6. There are also festive Christmas dinners on Fridays 4, 11 and 18 December for £7.50, with the option to add soup and a mince pie for just £2.
There are even some extra treats for families on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December, with free children’s breakfasts and £1 children’s lunches available when accompanied by a paying adult.
2. Make your food budget go further
The Community Grocery at Down Town can help ease the pressure on your weekly shopping bill, with affordable food and household essentials to help you make your money go further.
It’s a great way to save a little extra over the winter months and free up some money for other things, including Christmas.
3. Keep cosy and find affordable clothing
Looking for a warm winter coat, gloves or a scarf? Re Love the Pre Loved has a range of pre-loved winter essentials available to browse.
You can also donate good-quality winter items to help others stay warm this season.
And if you’re looking for work, starting a new job or taking part in training, the Working Wardrobe offers pre-loved clothing to help you feel confident and prepared for your next step.
4. Enjoy some company and try something creative
There’s no need to spend the winter months cooped up at home. Down Town has a programme of free weekly activities where you can meet new people, enjoy a hobby or simply have a chat.
You can enjoy board games and cards on Wednesdays, get creative at the Winter Craft Group on Thursdays, or start your Friday with Nattershack from 10am. Knit and Natter follows from midday, so bring along your knitting or crochet and enjoy some friendly company.
There’s also Books, Brews and a Bit of Me Time, where you can browse the book selection, enjoy a cuppa and take a little time for yourself.
5. Get into the Christmas spirit
There’s plenty of festive fun planned throughout December, including live piano music on Tuesday 1 December, Christmas games, carols with Life Church on Thursday 17 December and children’s Christmas crafts on Tuesday 22 December.
You can also enjoy a free mince pie with any purchased hot drink on Mondays 7, 14 and 21 December, and join us for free soup and a warm welcome on Wednesday 23 December.
Don’t forget to look out for the Down Town Christmas Giving Tree, too. Choose a Christmas bauble, make a donation of whatever you can and take your decoration home. Every donation helps support the work of Down Town and Burnley Together.
